The Newest Generation Of An Icon: The 2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI

The Golf is one of Volkswagen’s most iconic cars, so you may be wondering, what exciting enhancements will follow the announcement of the newest, 8th generation of this vehicle? The 2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI is more powerful and with even more desirable features. These enhancements are paired with the familiar GTI characteristics that we have all come to know and love.

What is GTI?

Volkswagen uses GTI as shorthand for Grand Touring Injection–a type of direct fuel injection first deployed in the Volkswagen Golf GTI of 1976! First developed and tested in certain Gran Turismo Italian models, which were designed to power long-distance journeys without ever sacrificing performance or comfort, Volkswagen innovated the technology by making it relevant and accessible for daily drivers.

Exterior

Some of the more notable exterior features you’ll notice include: a radiator grille with honeycomb design, black air intakes, standard LED headlights with a slimmer, sleeker profile that extends around to the fenders–or optional Performance LED headlights that incorporate Light Assist (automatic high beam) and a dynamic cornering function to help you see what’s coming around the bend.

The Golf GTI also features a strikingly unique bumper, and extended rocker panels that add even more character to this legendary model.

At the back, the roof spoiler and chrome-plated exhaust pipes are attention-grabbing features, and the LED taillight clusters create a unique signature.

You’ll also be drawn in by the striking wheel designs, beginning with the “Richmond” in standard 17” or available 18” sizes. But, if you’re looking for an even sportier look, you can – for the first time ever in a GTI – also get 19” Adelaide alloy wheels.

You’ll never have to worry about seeing through the fog, heavy rain, or snowfall with standard LED fog lights which can be found in the new 5 “X” design integrated in the bumper for a distinctive look.

Interior

Make no mistake – the inside of the 2022 Golf GTI is just as striking as the exterior. The adjustable LED ambient lighting and high-res displays in the interior creates light accents in all the right places and even ties into the graphics of the Volkswagen Digital Cockpit Pro which features two large displays: a 10.3” gauge cluster and a 10” touchscreen.

Feel confident on whatever path you choose, thanks to the GTI’s classic sport steering wheel, now heated as standard. An all new touch control interface allows the driver to easily access various navigation, audio, and driver assistance aids.

You can also opt for the available Head-Up Display (HUD) which puts all the most important information right in front of you, so you can keep your eyes fixed on the road ahead. When enabled, part of the windshield becomes a projection surface to display speed, navigation instructions, and information from various driver assistance systems.

Perhaps the most notable innovative interior feature of the Golf GTI is the seats. New racing-style front bucket seats with integrated headrests feature a red wrap-around accent and impressive side bolstering that doesn’t sacrifice everyday comfort. Classic GTI plaid cloth seating surfaces, in a new pattern called "Scale Paper", are standard, but it can also be opted for in the Performance trim.

The tilting or sliding panoramic sunroof is also available on all Golf GTI trims.

Safety and Driver Assistance Features

The most notable safety and driver assistance features for the 2022 Golf GTI include:

• Travel Assist with combined Lane Keeping Assist and Adaptive Cruise Control
• Side Assist to tell you if other vehicles are detected in your blind spot
• Park Distance Control (front and back) to help you get in and out of tight spots

Engine Transmission and Performance

The 2022 Golf GTI is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that produces 241 horsepower and 273 lb.-ft. of torque. That's an increase of 13 horses and 15 lb.-ft. versus its predecessor. That power is routed to the front wheels through either a standard six-speed manual transmission or an optional seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. Golf GTI vs. Golf R

The 2022 Volkswagen Golf R will have a nearly identical interior and similar modern tech to the 2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI. However, the 2022 Golf R will have more power, standard 4Motion All-Wheel Drive (not available in the GTI), a few extra driving modes, and an array of exclusive equipment and some different design details than the 2022 Golf GTI.
